Winnie the Pooh first appeared on a British stamp in 1979 when he was part of a series of four stamps issued for the Year of the Child. He appeared again in October 2010 to mark the PostEurop theme of children's books. There were 11 in this series.
I still have the 1979 card, I can't bring myself to part with it, but I've been gradually sending out the latest ones, and I've long since used up all the stamps. I don't know whether people are hoarding them, but when I searched for an incoming stamp, I could find only one.
The odd thing about this is that it was sent to me in England using the postage rate for Europe, 60p where 41p would have been sufficient.
This is a post for Sunday Stamps, now hosted by Violet Sky at "See it on a Postcard!"
That has always been such a popular character & I have never seen him on a stamp or card. Great to see him here.
ReplyDeleteThose are such heartwarming illustrations - and, of course, they bring back happy memories.
ReplyDeleteI love the original illustrations of Pooh so much! I wish Disney had not butchered the essence of Milne's characters. I probably would have never been to part with the cards or stamps.
ReplyDeleteI love the Pooh.
ReplyDeleteThe original illustrations are so much better than the Disney ones.
ReplyDeleteI love that first card. I have some Pooh postcards but not the ones with stamp illustrations.
1979 was a year of upheaval for me while I went to work in Norway so I never knew of the existence of these stamps. Great!
ReplyDeleteI love the new Pooh stamps and they're the stamps I use most often - you can still get them. My guess about the stamp you received was that the sender was so used to sending postcards abroad that they forgot that the 60p wasn't needed for yours! I strongly suspect that's a mistake I've made before now!
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your comments. I can't help but agree with Scrappy Grams and Postcardy about the Disney butchering of the originals.
ReplyDelete@Bob, I don't remember the 1979 stamps either but for some reason I do have the cards.
@Serena (from Hampshire?)I suppose I should order some direct but I always leave it too late and have to go to the local Post Office. Yes, I suspect I may have made that mistake too, and - worse - in reverse at least once.
I love these Winnie the Pooh stamps, also postcards with the original drawings as well as the modern ones!
ReplyDeleteI grew up with Disney's version of pooh so that is most familar to me. However I like the charm of these original drawings. Thank you for participating!
ReplyDeleteDelightful! I've always preferred the Ernest Shepard illustrations to any other.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Postcardy, the original drawings are far better than the Disney's version that I grew up with. My nieces and nephews love them@! Excellent choice for this week's SS :]
ReplyDeletePostcards Crossing
Who can resist Pooh and his friends.
ReplyDeleteI missed on that. Next life, however...
