Lincoln Cathedral, England

Never posted.  It was probably bought when we lived nearby, in the early 60s.

Lincoln Cathedral was rebuilt twice.  It was first completed in 1092, but subsequently destroyed by fire, rebuilt and destroyed by an earthquake.  Between 1300 and 1549 it was the tallest buiding in the world, but the central spire collapsed and was not rebuilt.  It is the third largest cathedral in England (St Paul's and York Minster are larger) and in my view one of the most beautiful.

Another of its claims to fame is that it was used in the filming of the Da Vinci code, as was Winchester Cathedral.

  3. Sheila, this card and the one from France are both places I have visited. Lincoln is only about 30 miles from my UK home, it always looks majestic, and is visible for miles around. Honfluer on the other hand is the stuff picture postcards are made of, I have a similar photograph that I took some years ago when cycling through that area of France.

  4. Hi Sheila, I live close to Lincoln and I remember being taken on a tour of the cathedral with the primary school. One thing that stands out in my mind is a small carving of a face in the shape of a crescent moon, supposed to represent a workman who died during the construction of the cathedral.

  5. What an interesting idea to post a postcard a day from what must be a massive collection. This black and white photo of Lincoln is particularly striking.

  6. Thank you all. John, Lincoln Cathedral was possibly the first cathedral I visited voluntarily all those years ago. Two school friends and I went on an expedition to Lincoln during the summer holidays.

Welcome to my postcard collection! I love hearing what you think of the cards - but spam WILL be deleted.
