Charlestown, Cornwall

Postmarked St Austell, dated 20 June 1972.
Charlestown: Dating back from 1791, this attractive little harbour still fills its original function.  Colour-washed cottages and a fine avenue of beech trees leading towards the sea, make it popular with atists and holiday-makers.  The growing town of St Austell is only one and a half miles away and Mevagissey, Fowey and Polperro are within easy reach.

Charlestown remains virtually unchanged to this day.  The harbour is owned by a company that owns a small fleet of tall ships, and there are often one or two of them at anchor there.  St Austell is now the largest town in Cornwall.

The card was written by my sister to my grandmother.  Its message is: "This is a little village where we go in the venings to watch the boats coming and going, then go for a drink in a small pub up the road."

  1. What a pretty card. It's got me curious if the name of Charleston, SC has anything to do w/this Charlestowne. that is amazing that the town hasn't changed that much over the years.

  2. I had a quick look for the origins of the names, and I suspect the Cornwall village is not as old as Charleston SC. As for it not having changed much, you'd have to see the roads in Cornwall to understand why! Narrow and twisty for the most part.
