PFF: French letter boxes

An unused postcard, recently bought.
Arrière Pays Mediterranéen
Les Boites à Lettres.

Although the card implies these are specifically from the Mediterranean, I don't believe they are necessarily.  Letter boxes in France have been yellow from the 1960s, before that they were the blue shown.  The actual shape of the box has changed but I think it has always been more or less rectangular.

This is a post for Postcard Friendship Friday.

  1. It's strange to have the old box next to the new one. Is it a display in an open air museum or something?

  2. You're right that it's odd to have both together, and I have no idea about the circumstances. There is no information on the card. I will say, though, that you often find old road signs in France with a new one nearby, or even virtually on top, so perhaps they like preserving a piece of history.

  3. And you have to hope that the old one is blocked up....

  5. They are such interesting colors and shapes. Is this a box a person would put outgoing mail in or is it where one would receive one's mail?

I'm looking forward to our swap! Thanks.

  8. I'm curious - do you think the Postman checks both of them?

  9. Thanks for all your comments.

@Blogaire, thought you might like it! :)

@steviewren, these are outgoing mail boxes. The wording on the boxes tells the time of the last or next emptying.

@postcardy, you're right. The blue one has its door open, and the second has a dial saying the 7TH (!!) collection for Wednesday has been taken, and the door could be open too. I can't believe they ever did so many collections!

@Aimee, it is odd, that's true.

@mrcachet, given that I think neither box is in service, probably not!
