Books, books, and more books

From Slovenia came this "XXL Bücherturm".  Fun, but I worry about the books that have blown away.  I do hope someone is looking after them.

From the Czech Republic comes this card showing the library or Philosophical Hall of the monastery of Vyssi Brod containing 70,000 volumes.  There is a wonderful fresco on the ceiling showing a scene from the Old testament: Solomon sitting in judgement.

Finally, another from the Czech Republic, showing books on the shelves of the National Library.

Anyone who has been reading this blog for any length of time will know I love books.  I don't just look at them, I do read them.  My current themes are Roman history, Celtic art, and central France, with a few thrillers thrown in for light relief.  I make good use of our local library but I can't resist having my own copies of history books in particular.  Otherwise I'm renewing them constantly.

So today my eyes lit up when I received a message to say I'd won an Amazon voucher for £30, and all I'd had to do was to comment on Alison's post about her history book addiction.  Appliances Online waved a magic wand and did the rest.  They've even whispered in my ear that anyone who comments on this post could have a chance of winning a voucher too.

So start commenting.....

That Monastery library is the place I want to be. I'll bring my own comfy chair.

  6. Free books = awesome. :)
I just came back from a trip to Portland, Oregon, home of Powell's Books - at the size of an entire city block, the largest independent bookstore in the world. If only I had millions of dollars, I could buy every book I wanted to...

  7. The books at the top aren't blowing away; they're coming in for a landing, right in some bibliophile's front yard. I'd better start watching for them!

  8. I love books, especially old books. They look as though real craftmanship has gone into creating them :-)

Next week I have an appointment to handle a very special book, the Luttrell Psalter which is almost 700 years old!

  9. I love the way old hardback books look on shelves. Its something my bookshelves have lost with the mass production of paperbacks but when they are easier to make they cost less and I can have more.

Hope you find some great books with your voucher.

  10. Those are some of the really cool book shelves. Reminded me of my uncle's bookshelf all filled with hardback encyclopedia books

  12. Books as art. :)

I think all great libraries should have paintings on the ceilings. Michelangelo started it all, you know, because the Sistine Chapel had no more room on the walls.

    Congratulations on your win!

  13. I used to be an avid reader - never was one much for TV. Now I mostly do unabridged books on CD when I'm driving - can't go a block without one playing. Thankfully, since my job ended two years ago, I discovered that my local library has wonderful selection.

  14. @ Relax Max:

Yep, I've visited many libraries and most of them had embossed wallpapers stuck on which kind of gave some really cool impressions.
